- Dejú sa v dobe, keď Morgoth, prvý Temný pán, býval v Stredozemi a Elfovia proti nemu viedli vojnu v jeho nepreniknuteľnej pevnosti Angband za získanie Silmarilov, troch drahokamov obsahujúcich posledné zostávajúce čisté svetlo Valinoru, ktoré Morgoth ukradol a zasadil do svojej železnej koruny.
