- Spoločníci prsteňa sa zapojili do samostatných dobrodružstiev, keď pokračovalo hľadanie. Aragorn, odhalený ako skrytý dedič starovekých kráľov Západu, sa spojil s Jazdcami Rohanu proti silám Isengardu a zúčastnil sa zúfalej víťaznej bitky pri Hornburgu. Merry a Pippin, zajatí orkmi, unikli do lesa Fangorn a tam sa stretli s Entmi.
- Gandalf sa zázračne vrátil a porazil zlého kúzelníka Sarumana. Medzitým Sam a Frodo postupovali smerom k Mordoru, aby zničili Prsteň, sprevádzaný Smeagolom-Gollumom, stále posadnutým svojím 'miláčikom'. Po bitke s obrovským pavúkom, Shelob, Sam opustil svojho pána, ktorého považoval za mŕtveho; ale Frodo je stále nažive - v rukách orkov. A celý čas sa zhromažďujú armády Temného pána.
